The Doctor and Lyra Belacqua
“There is someone I would like to see first…”
“I believe in God, Dust all-permeating,
Substance of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in two saviors, Lyra and Will, Dust’s New Eve and Adam,
Who were conceived in philial love,
Born into erotic love by Mary Malone,
Suffered under the Authority,
Descended in the Land of the Dead, and
On seeing the imprisoned souls, freed them.
They returned from the underworld
And closed all the windows between worlds,
Forsaking their mutual love to save Dust.
They returned to their own worlds to build the Republic of Heaven.
I believe in the holiness of freedom, consciousness, and creativity,
The evil of control, dominance, and manipulation,
The unity of all creation,
The importance of erotic love,
The goodness of the body,
And a return to Dust after death. AMEN.”
Lyra: Uncle, why did he try to poison you?
Lord Asriel: You wouldn’t understand.
Lyra: Yes I would.
Lord Asriel: Well I don’t see why! Apparently, you’re impossible to educate, a miscreant, and a liar.
Lyra: [frowns] What will the Magisterium do to you now?
Lord Asriel: The Magisterium’s days are numbered.
Lyra: What does that mean?
Lord Asriel: Trouble, with a bit of luck.
Lyra: Did you get the money you needed? Are you going north again?
Lord Asriel: The college council has defied the Magisterium. I’m leaving immediately.
Lyra: Can I come with you? I want to see the ice bears and glaciers and learn about dust and everything.
Lord Asriel: What do you know about dust?
Lyra: Nothing.
Lord Asriel: Good. Keep it that way. Now, be a good girl and do what you’re told.
Lyra: But you don’t do what you’re told! You don’t let anybody tell you what to do!
Lord Asriel: Yes, and look at the welcome I got!
[They notice Pan and Stelmaria fighing.]
Lyra: Hush, Pan.
Lord Asriel: I see your dæmon still changes shape. Hasn’t settled yet?
Lyra: Yeah… that has to do with dust, doesn’t it? Why kids’ dæmons can change shape but grown-ups’ dæmons can’t.
Lord Asriel: Lyra, dust is none of your business. You try and behave.
“It enables you to see what others wish to hide.”
